The Miami Dolphins made some big, potential franchise changing moves in the offseason to try and be a competitor for the 2015 season. They traded for Kenny Stills, Zach Bowman, C.J. Mosley but most notably, they brought in star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh from the Detroit Lions.
Four weeks into the season, the Dolphins are 1-3 and sitting at the bottom of the AFC East after they lost to the New York Jets in London over the weekend.
The Dolphins lost more than a game in London, they also lost their head coach, Joe Philbin. For the second straiht season, a team is coming back home from their London game without a head coach. Last year, it was the Oakland Raiders and now, Miami has fired Philbin, not even on year into his new contract extension.
Following from NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal.
The Dolphins are firing head coach Joe Philbin, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, according to a team source. The Philbin era is over after 24 wins, 28 losses, no playoff appearances, and one improbable contract extension at the end of last season.
Tight ends coach Dan Campbell is the presumptive favorite to become the Dolphins’ interim head coach, NFL Media’s Rand Getlin reported, per a source. Getlin added that Dolphins players have a strong affinity for Campbell and that they would welcome the change.
As noted by NFL.com, Dan Campbell, who has never even been a coordinator in the NFL, will be taking over as interim head coach.
Campbell has been with the Dolphins organization since 2010, when he began as a coaching intern, and took over their tight ends in 2011. He played for the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints during an 11-year NFL career.
This transition could be a weird one but it is understandable considering both coordinators on the team, Bill Lazor on the offensive end and Kevin Coyle on the defensive end, have close to no coaching experience in the NFL. They’re taking a shot on Campbell with a disgruntled 1-3 team and hopefully for Miami, it can work out.
