Memphis Grizzlies Vice President Ed Stefanski said on Sirius SM NBA Radio today that he is confident that point guard Mike Conley Jr. will re-up with Memphis this offseason.
Stefanski on Sirius SM NBA Radio (Transcribed by CBS’ James Herbert):
“At trade deadline, we didn’t even think about trading Mike,” Stefanski said. “We have all intentions of bringing Mike back. He has made it known that he loves Memphis. Will he go on the recruiting trips? Sure, because these guys were recruited for college at 17 years old and they haven’t been recruited since, so they like to get a little love, which is fine. And Mike will go out there, but we’ll be right there and when it’s all said and done, I believe Mike will be back in a Grizzly uniform.”
Memphis should be confident in their chances, as Conley seems to genuinely love Memphis and his teammates. However, the 28 year old point guard will have plenty of other suitors; the Knicks and Nets have already reportedly shown interest.
It’s hard to say what Conley will do; I’m sure he himself doesn’t even know yet. Wherever he goes, he’ll get a max contract if he wants it. He’s an elite point guard in his prime, and deserves the max. Memphis, New York, Brooklyn, or any other team with a need at the point guard position would be happy to max out Conley.
