Director Melina Matsoukas claims that Golden Globes voters refused to attend screenings of her film, Queen & Slim. Mastoukas stated of the 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, nearly none attended screenings of the love story starring Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya.
She told Variety, “We held three screenings for the HFPA and almost no members attended.”
She added, “For me, it’s reflective of their voting body. It’s not reflective of the society in which we live in or the industry as it stands today. They don’t value the stories that represent all of us, and those stories are so often disregarded and discredited, as are their filmmakers.”
Mastoukas concluded, “It’s extremely discouraging. It’s extremely infuriating. And it just represents an archaic system that is full of people who don’t value us.”
Produced by Lena Waithe, the film has outperformed many expectations by grossing nearly $30 million domestically. In addition, Big Sean, Snoop Dogg and many more have bought out entire theaters for people to go see the film.
The Golden Globes will air on January 5th on NBC. Check out the full list of nominees right here.
