Ohio State freshman guard Meechie Johnson has announced that he has transferred to the South Carolina Gamecocks. The former four-star recruit did not quite make the impact that he wanted in his first year with Ohio State and decided to enter the transfer portal during the offseason. He had a long list of programs interested with three years of eligibility left to play. The South Carolina program has a new Head Coach coming in and needs to fill out their roster with potential like Johnson.

This past season with the Ohio State Buckeyes, Meechie Johnson averaged 4.4 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game in 17.7 minutes per game of action. He paired those numbers with a field goal percentage of 30.8 percent and a three-point percentage of 32.1 percent. While he flashed talent on the court he was stuck behind more experienced guards while with the Buckeyes. Moving from the Big Ten to the SEC will be a major change, but perhaps all he needs is a change of scenery. South Carolina could certainly use a positive change.

South Carolina and Meechie Johnson are both heading into a new era and needed a change after the past season. Johnson is a former four-star recruit and had plenty of interest because of his potential. With an increased role and more minutes with the Gamecocks, his production level should go up next season. The hope is that this love works out for both Johnson and South Carolina moving forward. For better or worse this is how the Transfer Portal works now.
