Review: Bryan Singer is back in the director’s chair for ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ and it pays off in one of the best comic book movies of all time.
The movie is a action packed, thriller equipped with all the right amounts of witty one liners, emotional character development and an interesting plot.
‘Days’ serves as somewhat of a sequel to 2006’s ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘X-Men: First Class’ (2011). In the not so distant future, the war between mutants and humans has erupted causing worldwide destruction an fatalities on both sides. With mutants on the verge of extinction, the few remaining X-Men send Wolverine back in time to help change history and stop the event that put the war into motion.
With any time traveling movie, there are usually huge plot holes left unanswered but ‘Days’ does its best to tie up any loose ends and past mistakes from previous films. The movie also constantly switching between 2023 and the 1970s but never feels chaotic as the action taking place in both time periods is entertaining enough to keep the movie moving smoothly.
Since the film boasts such a huge cast it is easy to slip into the error of unnecessary cameos, however Singer gives everyone something to do that is relevant to the plot. Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence are excellent as always bringing a more emotional side to their respective characters.
However it is Evan Peters that steals the show as Peter Maximoff aka Quicksilver. His few scenes are hilarious and highly entertaining. Audiences will definitely wanting more screen time for Quicksilver in future installments.
There is also a little Easter egg for the ladies (and some fellas) as Hugh Jackman treats the audience to a hearty shot of his butt.
‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ is perhaps the best film in the series, combining newcomers and fan favorites in a cohesive narrative that will tide you over until ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ in 2016.
PS: Stay for an after credits scene that hints at what is to come for the mutants.
