GODZILLA – MAY 16

Stars: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Sally Hawkins
Synopsis: Godzilla rises from the depths of the ocean to battle two evil creatures who were engineered though nuclear waste and threaten the existence of mankind.
Runtime: 123 minutes
Review: ‘Godzilla’ is a monster of a movie boasting bigger fights and better effects but a messy plot.
The movie follows Joe Brody, an engineer who worked at a power plant in Japan. When seismic activity brings the plant toppling down, it kills his wife in the process. He spends the next 15 years trying to prove that it was something unnatural that caused the accident much to his son, Ford Brody’s wishes. Meanwhile Dr Ishiro Serizawa and Dr Vivienne Graham have been experimenting on an unusual rock formation that gives off odd electrical energy. PHEW. Sounds like a lot right?
The plot of the film tends to drag on with some many stories interchanging. Audiences may feel jipped on action as we get little 10 second teases of monster to monster brawling for most of the movie. The destruction and explosions don’t happen until the last 30 minutes of the film. But when it does happen, it delivers.
A lot of the dialogue does come off as second rate and cheesy which produces a few laughs where there shouldn’t be. Oops.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olson have excellent chemistry as a young couple torn by the monsters destruction. It’s a promising look into their next foray together as Quicksilver and the Scarlett Witch in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ next year.
The special effects are top notch. Godzilla is bigger and badder than ever and has never looked more realistic. Director Gareth Edwards also manages to create a dark and dismal world that’s left in the wake of destruction.
‘Godzilla’ is an excellent summer blockbuster that is sure to entertain and is a definite step up over the 1998 version. Godzilla has proved he will be the King of Lizards and the king of summer.
