Max Scherzer, ace pitcher of the Washington Nationals, achieved a feat few men have ever done before and he tied a mark last achieved in 2001. In a Nationals win over the Detroit Tigers, he struck out 20 batters and did it in dominant fashion.
Scherzer tied the record in a six-hit 3-2 complete-game victory against the Detroit Tigers. His career high was 17 strikeouts and he tied the previous nine-inning mark of 20 strikeouts shared by Roger Clemens, Kerry Wood and Randy Johnson.
Scherzer said the following, courtesy of the Associated Press.
“Tonight was an emotional game, facing a former team and all those guys I have so much respect for,” Scherzer said after pitching against the Tigers for the first time since leaving Detroit. “And so to have a game like this against that caliber of hitter on their side, it really puts a feather in my cap.”
