On a night where many would expect that the New York Knicks would struggle against a strong Dallas Mavericks team, the news for New York got even worse. Their star, Carmelo Anthony, has some back issues and may be out for a little bit of time including the game against the Mavs. On this night though, some Knicks stepped up to perform well. It wasn’t enough though as the Dallas Mavericks beat the New York Knicks 109-102 in overtime.
Tyson Chandler set season highs with 17 points and 25 rebounds, which was also an NBA high, against his former team. Dirk Nowitzki had a season-high 30 points with 6 rebounds for Dallas. Chandler Parsons contributed 13 points with 5 rebounds for the Mavs and J.J. Barea came off the bench and provided a spark for Dallas with 10 points.
J.R. Smith, starting with Anthony sidelined by back spasms, was 1-10 from the field entering the fourth quarter, he then shot 6-10 in the fourth. Then he made a tying, step-back jumper with 0.9 seconds left in regulation to send it to overtime. Jose Calderon lead the Knicks with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Samuel Dalembert had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Iman Shumpert had 10 points and 4 assists. Pablo Prigioni came off the bench with 12 points and 6 assists and Amar’e Stoudemire had 10 points and 8 rebounds to go with his scoring output.
Jose Calderon, the biggest name going to the Knicks in the six-player blockbuster trade of the summer, after one season with the Mavericks, matched a career high with seven 3-pointers to score all of his 21 points.
In the overtime, Chandler put Dallas ahead for good on a dunk at 101-99 in his first game against New York since that off-season deal that brought him back to Dallas after 3 seasons with the Knicks.
Dallas Mavericks are 11-5. New York Knicks are 4-12.
