The Dallas Mavericks have reached agreement on a new contract with free agent center Salah Mejri, his agency announced on Sunday. The deal is a one-year agreement for the veteran’s minimum salary, allowing Mejri to test free agency after the 2018-19 season concludes.
Mejri signed with Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports this past February and entered free agency being represented by the company. The Mavericks recently withdrew their qualifying offer to Mejri, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Mejri, nicknamed “The Mej” by Mavs fans, has established himself as a forceful shot-blocker and intimidator in his three years with the team. He’s also quickly become a fan-favorite in the city of Dallas, and shares close relationships with Mavericks great Dirk Nowitzki and No. 3 overall pick Luka Doncic.
Mejri, who’s spent each of his NBA seasons with the Mavericks, is the second free-agent acquisition for Dallas. The team also brought in marquee center DeAndre Jordan at the start of free agency.
Mejri will sign his new deal with the Mavericks once the NBA’s moratorium period lifts and stay with the team. He averaged 3.5 points, four rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 12 minutes per game, appearing in 61 games on the season.
