When it comes to stories like these I battle myself. Because on one hand when I see stories like these I think “Go and get your money”. I have no qualms with any sportsman/woman that get paid, especially when the owners are swimming in cash.
But then there’s the other side where I see the fact that it’s Chandler Parsons and go “well he’s nowhere near a max player.” See where I struggle?
Dallas Morning News’ Eddie Sefko held a chat were he answers questions about the Dallas Mavericks and their current state, both things he knows about very well. The first question was about, Chandler Parsons who is more like a recruitment partner for the Mavs than a player these days. He has the option to opt out and become a free agent and the Mavs would love to have him back. But even though he’s not what we would call “Max worthy”, the Mavericks would most likely have to pay him max just to keep him for the long-term.
If he opts out, do you think Chandler Parsons is worth a max deal that he’d be looking for?
Sefko: I’d be scared to death to offer it, but you may have to. There’s so much money out there this summer that a lot of borderline max players are going to get the full Monty.
Again, get your money. If you have max on the table or even if you don’t, try to get it on the table. I guess it’s just something that is standard procedure. If you’re a borderline max player (personally I don’t even consider Chandler Parsons borderline.) you will most likely get max money.
