Dirk Nowitzki has decided that it’s better to miss some time now at the beginning of the season, than to play through pain and eventually have surgery down the line. The German underwent an arthroscopic procedure yesterday due to constant swelling and pain in his left knee, the condition forced Nowitzki out of the Mavs last three preseason games.
Dirk is expected to resume basketball duties within six weeks – possibly sooner, depending on his recovery – but that would eat into a slight chunk of the Mavs opening schedule which would include games against the Lakers, twice.
Nowitzki had been open about his desire to postpone surgery if possible, but realized that may be the only solution when the pain didn’t subside.
