Matt Harvey’s season is officially over!
Agent Scott Boras tells ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin that Matt Harvey will undergo surgery to to alleviate thoracic outlet syndrome in his right shoulder. The operation will abruptly end his season.
Matt Harvey was placed on the disabled list earlier in the week. Basically the compression of nerves and blood vessels in the shoulder area creates excruciating pain. Often times the removal of a rib is in order to alleviate the pain. Twins right-hander Phil Hughes also underwent the procedure earlier this week which ended his season.
Harvey, 26, has not pitched well in 2016 compiling a ERA of 4.86. His average fastball velocity was also down 1.5 mph from the year before. In the advanced statistics the righty posted diminished strikeout (7.4 K/9), walk (2.4 BB/9) and ground-ball (40.8 percent) rates.
The Mets could look to the trade market to fill his absence although I suspect they will likely hold off and wait until Zach Wheeler is ready. Some other in house options include lefty Sean Gilmartin and right-handers Rafael Montero, Robert Gsellman, Gabriel Ynoa and Seth Lugo.
