The Buffalo Bills heated quarterback battle between Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor, and E.J. Manuel may be inching closer to a conclusion sooner rather than later. The veteran Matt Cassel may be looking for a job elsewhere even after being acquired in a trade from Minnesota this past offseason. ESPN’s Ben Rodak had some interesting notes regarding the status of Cassel.
I would give EJ Manuel the slight nod as the “winner” from spring practices but Cassel was the clear “loser” of the group. There wasn’t a practice open to reporters where Cassel stood out among his peers, while there were at least one or two sessions where he was just downright bad. I went into OTAs thinking Cassel had the best chance to be the opening day starter, given his level of experience, but I now question if he will make the roster.
Buffalo can create over 4 million in cap space by releasing Cassel as that money could be used to set up contract extensions in the future. The Cassel news also likely means the team is fairly happy with Tyrod Taylor who was brought over from Baltimore this past offseason. Cassel certainly isn’t out of the picture by any means but if he continues to struggle during training camp he could be shown the door.
