Matt Barnes is tired of your chants. More specifically, he is sick of people chanting Derek Fisher’s name at him in opposing arenas.
If you recall, Barnes and Fisher had a very public spat recently after the latter’s romantic relationship with the former’s estranged wife. It was all sudden, it was all strange, and really, it was all unnecessary.
Barnes and Fisher haven’t really healed those wounds. Fisher hasn’t ended his relationship. Barnes has still taken some shots through the media. And fans have carried on with the jokes.
Barnes has never been a well-loved player. His tough, and sometimes dirty, playing style often rubs fans of other teams the wrong way. As such, he has been routinely serenaded by chants of “Derek Fisher” in opposing arenas. And gosh-darn it, he’s tired of them.
Following via Nubyjas Wilborn of Sporting News:
“Everywhere I go I’m still getting Derek Fisher chants. I’m sick of that s—. I can hear that from the stands. But if I say anything to a fan, I’m catching a fine. So I do my best to tune it out.”
Word.
I do feel bad for Barnes, because this is a personal matter. But at the same time, his decision-making led to it becoming a public storyline and now, here we are.
Barnes should expect to continue hearing those chants.
