“How we still slaves in 2016?”. Whether that was a subliminal or not on behalf of JAY Z, the question still remains. As of late the notion of being slaves or dealing with the injustices as a person of color continues today. If you turn on the news, log on to twitter or Facebook daily, you’ll come across a new story pertaining to the unwarranted killing of an individual of color.
To further take a stand against the injustices artists, athletes and celebrities alike have used their platform to spread awareness. As you see Colin Kaepernick has taken a notable stand which is the talk of several headlines in the news. Rapper T.I. has even decided to spread awareness with his latest single ‘War Zone’.
It isn’t just the mainstream artist looking to spread awareness it is the up and coming artist as well. Lets take M.A.Y.O.R.’s own Bike for example. Bike has decided to give us a very powerful cover of Marvin Gaye’s legendary record ‘What’s Going On’. ‘What’s Going On’ is a record in 1971 which was originally inspired by a police brutality incident.
For Bike he looks to deliver the same message with “Black Lives Matter” as the focal point and that is made clear from the imagery used in the video. Check out the ‘What’s Going On’ cover from Bike below..
