Washington Wizards forward Markieff Morris will undergo sports hernia surgery on Friday, reports Candace Buckner of the Washington Post:
While the timeline for his return to basketball activities is undetermined until surgery is complete, it should be expected that Morris will miss at least Wizards training camp, which begins Tuesday in Richmond.
According to Buckner, the surgery was postponed until Friday due to family reasons and the ongoing court case that Morris and brother Marcus (forward on the Boston Celtics) are involved in.
(9/22 UPDATE) The Wizards announced Morris will be out 6-8 weeks following his sports hernia surgery.
Wizards forward Markieff Morris underwent surgery today to repair a sports hernia. The procedure, which went as expected, was performed by Dr. Michael Brunt at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Center for Advanced Medicine in St. Louis, MO. Morris will begin the rehabilitation process immediately and is expected to miss approximately six to eight weeks.
This isn’t Morris’ first hernia surgery; he underwent a similar procedure in 2010, while he was at Kansas. That time, he only missed preseason practices and played 34 of his 38 games the following season.
Washington, more than most playoff teams, lack depth. It doesn’t sound like Morris will need to miss serious time, but if he does, the Wizards could be in serious trouble, as every injury to a key piece hurts, and Morris is one of only five or six key pieces on the roster.
Morris, 28, averaged 14 points and a career-high 6.5 rebounds per game, while shooting a career-best 36.5 percent from three-point range. He was a crucial part of the Wizards’ competitiveness in the regular season and playoffs.
