Fans of The Incredible Hulk and Marvel’s Cinematic Universe all would like to see a solo film for the green giant. Mark Ruffalo himself would even like to star in one. There’s been plenty of reasons of why a solo film hasn’t happened since ’08, but Ruffalo finally confirms why. In a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies, Ruffalo lets the world know that Universal has been holding the film up.
I think they’ve been working on it. Marvel and Universal famously don’t get along very well, and so that’s working against us, definitely. But I know for a fact that everyone is holding out hope that one day we can do it. But the nature of the relationship right now, it’s a little prohibitive. And I hope that that changes, that changes with regimes, it changes over the course of time. But right now it doesn’t look particularly promising.
Universal, who were forced to give up the rights to Marvel’s character after not being able to start production on a sequel to their 2003 adaption, still holds onto the distribution rights of the character. Although Marvel has the rights to do whatever they want with The Hulk, they can’t distribute a film without a green-light from Universal. Hopefully one day the two studio heads can have a sit down and come to an agreement the same way Marvel has done with Sony, for Spider-Man.
