This was one of those business situations that could’ve been avoided but both parties did their part in snapping ties.
Mark Cuban talked to ‘Dennis and Friedo’ on 103.3FM ESPN Dallas on Friday and a talking point was Tyson Chandler. Cuban went to talk about possibly extending Chandler’s contract but his agent didn’t take it anywhere. And then the whole DeAndre Jordan thing came around and then it was simply deciding “Chandler or DeAndre”. As it turns out, Dallas ended up with neither. So Chandler (specifically Chandler’s agent) took an L for not sorting out an extension early and Dallas took an L for leaving Chandler in the cold. Here’s Cuban’s side.
“He does have the right to be salty,” Cuban said…
“I didn’t think it would get to that point,” Cuban said of the 33-year-old Chandler’s departure from Dallas. “We actually tried to have discussions right at the start of the year about an extension and it kind of just died on the vine. His agent didn’t really take it anywhere, and I was the first to say ‘If you don’t want to take it right now, we’ll try to figure something out at the end of the year,’ because I realized that by waiting that gave Tyson an extra year.
“Then the opportunity for DeAndre came along and we were pretty straightforward. Tyson or his agent gave us the ultimatum before the decision was made. He said he wouldn’t wait. That’s his decision. It is what it is. He does have a right to be salty, because I really did suggest to him — and it’s exactly the way I thought — that he’d be here for a long time.”
To be fair, if Chandler waited he’d still be with the Mavs, but then that would give the view of ‘Dallas took Tyson back as a rebound’ which would be pretty demoralising for Tyson.
But he’s now in Phoenix and they will definitely value him on the defensive side. Dallas, yea. I don’t know how they going to get it done.
