Being rich sounds nice. And Mark Cuban isn’t making it seem any worse.
In an appearance on Bill Simmons’ new HBO show “Any Given Wednesday,” (some NSFW language) Cuban spoke about his Dallas Mavericks. In a bloated NBA market with TV money everywhere, franchises are at their peaks in value. The Los Angeles Clippers sold for two billion dollars just a few years ago and that was before the TV money had officially come in.
It would not be a surprise to see some franchises go for huge amounts of money if the owners decided to sell them. But Cuban is apparently unwilling to even think about the proposition.
The Mavericks owner told Simmons that he would never sell his team, not even for three billion dollars. His reasoning: “What do I need three billion dollars for?”
Ah. Must be nice.
Cuban has a reputation as an owner who truly loves his team. He is always involved in its decision making. These efforts have usually made his players love him more than is prevalent for any other team owners.
Turning away three billion dollars is crazy talk for you and me. But Mark Cuban is crazy enough to do it without looking back.
