Though we’ve seen 44 presidents of the United States before Donald Trump, none of those leaders have created an obvious rift in their country quite like this new administration has. We’ve seen the President’s lackadaisical decisions create a divide in our country as racism and social inequality has reared its ugly head again in our long history.
The sports world namely has been a large, unified (for the most part) community hoping to fight back and protest against the racial inequity we see today in our country. One of the leaders of this movement in the NBA has been Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban who has voiced his disdain for the current administration on more than one occasion.
When asked by ESPN’s Tim McMahon as to whether he would consider making a presidential run in 2020, Cuban didn’t write off the idea completely, “Aspirations? No. Would I consider it? Yes. Am I leaning towards it? No.” Cuban continued “It’s not my all-time goal to be president. It’s certainly not my aspiration to have a political office. I wouldn’t run for any other office. Do I think I can be effective? Yes, but I have no desire to be a politician. If I did something, if I ran for office, if I ran for president, it would be because I thought I could have an impact.”
Though there’s no doubt Mark Cuban would make for an eccentric and untraditional candidate, it’s clear that becoming that heavily involved politically is not very high up on his to-do list. Cuban even put some exact percentages on the odds of his candidacy in the 2020 election:
“But right now, I’d say it’s 90 percent no and 10 percent yes, because I think my wife might divorce me.”
Even if Cuban decided to run, the odds of him getting elected without a valid political background are slim though that is pretty much exactly what happened with our current president so nothing should be ruled out. While the 2020 election may be lingering in the back of Cuban’s mind, don’t expect the Mavs owner to drop his passion for basketball and pursue a career politically.
