Mario Chalmers — who was promptly waived by the Memphis Grizzlies last season after tearing his achilles — has been cleared to play, but the 30-year-old point guard remains unsigned. Chalmers, or perhaps his former teammate Norris Cole, could potentially join the Cleveland Cavaliers, per Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinal:
While Chalmers is eligible to be signed by the Heat, who dealt him to the Memphis Grizzlies last November in a tax-saving trade, such prospects would appear unlikely with the Heat loaded with possibilities at point guard with Goran Dragic, Beno Udrih, Briante Weber, Tyler Johnson and Josh Richardson. A reunion with LeBron James with the Cleveland Cavaliers remains a possibility, but that also could be a potential landing spot for former James Heat teammate Norris Cole, who also remains a free agent.
The Cavs adding a backup point guard is logical; if Mo Williams really decides to retire, the team’s need for one will be even more dire than it already is. And Chalmers is the best point guard available. Assuming that his injury didn’t slow him down too much, this would be a perfect match.
