Smart’s injury was originally ruled as a sprained thumb prior to the news. He suffered this injury during the first half of Sunday’s loss to the Indiana Pacers while diving to the ground. He returned to the game and taped up his thumb after downplaying the injury.
On Monday, tests came out that Marcus Smart’s thumb injury was more severe and it then led to the decision to get surgery on the thumb. Before making the decision, he traveled to New York on Thursday to get a second opinion.
Marcus Smart missed a few weeks earlier in the season after swiping at a picture frame when the Celtics lost a close game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Smart is averaging 10.2 points, 4.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds over 29.9 minutes per game. Marcus Smart will be a key factor for the Boston Celtics and their championship aspirations this season.
