Manu Ginobili is arguably the greatest 6th man in the history of professional basketball. He is so good and so important for the Spurs and their culture that Gregg Poppovich told him he wanted Manu back at age 40. The decision to return was not easy, however, according to, well, Manu Ginobili himself in his nearly weekly colum in La Nacion.
“He told me that he wanted me to continue and he needed me on the team,”
“If he did not want me, it would have been easier for me.”
“I accepted because it is a great honor to be with such a franchise, at 40 years old, feeling important, with people who tell me that they love me and that I am still important to the team,”
“Everything I had in mind if I retired, I can postpone for another time. On the other hand, if I retired and took a year (off), I would not be able to compete again at 41.”
Manu may be little more than a supporting character for the Spurs next season but it will nice to see him play for at least one more season.
