It has been an up and down start to the career of Malik Monk. First, he endured an ankle injury last season that sapped him of playing time. Then, he received inconsistent playing time even when he was reportedly healthy. Now, Monk will have go get through another injury.
According to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer, Monk has a fractured thumb and will be out 6-8 weeks. The injury occurred at the end of a recent Summer League game, according to Bonnell. Monk had 23 points in that contest, on 9-16 shooting. He injured the thumb when slapping the ball with three seconds left in the game.
Monk missed all of last year’s Summer Legue with an injury as well. Obviously, he will not play again in this year’s Summer League either. “It’s tough. He played so well yesterday,” Hornets coach James Borrego said via the Observer. “We’re not going to let this deter us. It’s a little setback right now. He’ll be in the gym and we’ll continue to work on (dribbling with) his left hand.”
The Hornets took Malik Monk with the 11th overall selection in last year’s NBA Draft. The Kentucky shooting guard averaged 6.7 points per game last season on 36 percent shooting. He only averaged 13.6 minutes per game season as well.
