Since having the honor of being named Super Bowl MVP, Malcolm Smith will now hop to his second team since leaving the Seahawks. Smith has broken out into a solid linebacker, but it looks like the Raiders want something else at the position. San Francisco has been extremely busy, adding players from everywhere.
Peter Schrager was the first to report that the Niners and Smith had mutual interest.
49ers not done. Hearing mutual interest between SF and former Seahawks Super Bowl MVP and Raiders LB Malcolm Smith. @gmfb @NFLonFOX

No contract details have been reported yet, but after coming off two consecutive 100+ combined tackle seasons, Smith should be cashing in. Smith is a cover linebacker, who is basically zero threat to rush the passer after he failed to record a sack in the last season.
With the Niners being awful at practically every position, adding anyone is most likely an upgrade. I would imagine that Smith will be jumping in for Ahmad Brooks and San Fran suddenly has a decent linebacking core. With the great Navorro Bowman manning the inside with Gerald Hodges, who had a career year last year racking up 83 combined tackles, the outside will be covered by Aaron Lynch and Malcolm Smith. Although not big names, they will be hard to deal with at times.
Look for Smith’s career to continue trending upwards in San Francisco.
