Robert Card, an Army reservist accused of killing 18 people in Maine, was found dead near the Androscoggin River on Friday, October 27. Card’s death was reportedly caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, ending a two-day search for the former firearms instructor.
“This has been a tragic two days – not just for Lewiston, Maine, but for our entire country,” President Joe Biden said.
“Once again, an American community and American families have been devastated by gun violence. In all, at least eighteen souls brutally slain, more injured, some critically, and scores of family and friends praying and experiencing trauma no one ever wants to imagine.”
The search for Card reportedly began on the evening of Wednesday, October 25. Just before 7 p.m. EST, shots were fired at Just-in-Time Recreation, a bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine. Less than 20 minutes later, an active shooter was reportedly spotted at Schemengees Bar and Grill, a restaurant four miles away from the bowling alley. An hour later, state police issued a shelter in place request and began circulating a picture of the shooter. Minutes before 10:00 p.m. EST, police also shared a photo of a vehicle believed to belong to the shooter.
In the two days following the shooting, authorities began searching around Lewiston and nearby towns for the shooter. By Thursday afternoon, Card was charged with eight counts of murder and one day later, he was found dead near the Androscoggin River.
