The Orlando Magic have traded Elfrid Payton to the Phoenix Suns for a second-round pick, a league source confirmed to Def Pen Hoops. The move was first reported by ESPN.
The second-round pick sent to Phoenix will be used in 2018, according to ESPN.
“We are excited to add a player of Elfrid’s caliber to our young core,” Suns general manager Ryan McDonough said. “Elfrid is an athletic point guard who has good size, length and a feel for the game. We think he’ll be a great fit with our team and we look forward to seeing him in a Suns uniform.”
The Suns spent much of Thursday seeking trades for a young point guard, and with the addition of Elfrid Payton, landed the player they had been seeking.
The team also explored trades for some of their veteran players, a source told Def Pen Hoops, but were uninterested in the offers for their assets.
To create room for Payton, the Suns waived point guard Isaiah Canaan, a source told Def Pen Hoops. Canaan was recently diagnosed with a season-ending ankle fracture, and its possible he rejoins the team again in the future, the source said.
