While it is no secret that the Orlando Magic have to make changes this offseason, some level of discretion may be necessary. When the agent for recently signed Patricio Garino tweeted a picture of his client with pen in hand, he forgot to take note of the giant white board in the back containing lists of free agent targets and possible trades. Magic GM Rob Hennigan has had to swoop in and do damage control for the already questionable front office.
When asked by the Orlando Sentinel, Hennigan was quick to shut down the severity of the leak. He said the lists are “not indicative of plans” and were “simply listing options, including some of which other teams have inquired about.”The lists of players involves titles such as “hybrid trade”, “hybrid free agency”, and “spread bigs trade”. The hybrid implies players who can play multiple positions, while “spread big” means big men who can stretch the floor with long-range shooting.
Of the names listed, it isn’t anyone terribly surprising. The Atlanta Hawks’ Paul Millsap, Denver Nuggets’ Danilo Gallinari, and Golden State Warriors’ Andre Iguodala are atop the “hybrid free agency” list. All of these players will have the chance to leave their current teams this offseason. Names like Stanley Johnson, Wilson Chandler, and Dario Saric are on the “hybrid trade” list. Saric, in particular, has “AG?” next to his name, implying the Magic may consider trading Aaron Gordon for him.
This leak seems business as usual for the Magic, who are on the cusp of serious turnover at the front office level. Hennigan is rumored to be getting the pink slip after the season ends anyway, so this mess may not need much cleaning up. It was reported in March that former Magic coach Doc Rivers may have interest in the job, but those rumors seem to have faded. This is just another nail in the coffin for Rob Hennigan.
