Magic Johnson recently returned to the Los Angeles Lakers in an advisory role. Based on his Tweets, his advice will probably be along the lines of: “Kevin Durant is very good, we should get him.” Johnson appeared on Spectrum Sportsnet (transcribed by The Score):
“We’re a superstar away from competing against (the Warriors and Spurs)… One guy changes our landscape, because we have everything we need now, except that one guy to make everybody better.
“That’s why I joined. If I felt we were far away and it was going to be a waste of my time, I wouldn’t be here and I wouldn’t have taken this role. I know that we have the pieces in place and we will continue to get better.”
…
“One thing about this organization is we always come back,” Johnson said. “And we will come back again. … I’m here to say that we’re ready to take that step.”
The Lakers have some great young talent in D’Angelo Russell, Brandon Ingram, Jordan Clarkson, and maybe even Ivica Zubac, who has been performing admirably lately.
However, all of those players are far too young. Ingram isn’t actually a good NBA player yet, and Russell is borderline. Regardless of which superstar they are hypothetically getting (even if it was LeBron James), the Warriors aren’t sweating the Lakers.
