The Orlando Magic signed Ben Gordon to a shocking contract last year, 2 years worth $9 million. $9 MILLION for BEN GORDON?! Are they out of their mind? They weren’t, they just signed him to that big of a contract because they didn’t have enough payroll signed up to the team, lucky Gordon. Now a source is saying that the Magic will decline the 2nd year of his option and Ben Gordon will be a free agent once again.
According to Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski:
The Orlando Magic are declining the $4.5 million team option for 2015-’16 on guard Ben Gordon’s contract, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Gordon will become an unrestricted free agent.
Passing on Gordon’s option will give the Magic $14.5 million in salary cap space for free agency. Gordon, 32, averaged 6.2 points a game for the Magic last season.
This makes total sense for the Magic. They just drafted shooting guard Mario Hezonga, who seems to be a lethal shooter with good size and that immediately takes away Gordon’s role from the Magic offensively. There is really no point to keep him on any NBA team and it’s very unlikely we will see him return to an NBA team this summer, but if he does, good for him. Get those paychecks.
