
BBC has confirmed the release date for the fifth season of Luther. Idris Elba’s highly-anticipated return to the small screen will come to BBC One on New Year’s Day, followed shortly by parts 2, 3, and 4 on January 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, respectively.
BBC recently teased fans with a new trailer showcasing Luther in action in the new season. The network’s official description for season five hints that things won’t get any easier for the titular protagonist though. “A new spate of nightmarish murders brings DCI John Luther (Idris Elba) to once again face the depths of human depravity on the streets of London.”
Ruth Wilson’s is set to return alongside Elba as the fan favorite Alice Morgan. Dermot Crowley, Patrick Malahide, and Michael Smiley are also set to reprise their roles for the upcoming season. Wunmi Mosaku will join the new season as D.S. Catherine Halliday, a new recruit paired with Luther for the case.
Although it has yet to even air, show creator Neil Cross is already thinking past season five. He’s discussed his hopes for a film many times, even Elba chimed in to offer his support. “It’s very much in our minds, the film. I think it could be an amazing series of films.”
Luther season 5 will premiere on BBC One on New Year’s Day.
