John Woo and Universal Pictures are set to bring back the 1989 classic thriller, The Killer. The original film, which was directed by John Woo, starred Chow Yun-Fat as Jeffrey, a legendary mob assassin who retires after a local singer goes blind because of crossfire during his most recent hit. Ultimately, Jeffrey returns to his old profession to perform one last hit to earn money to pay for surgery for the local singer to get her vision back. The film initially did not receive great reviews in Hong Kong where it was initially released, but it gained acclaim overseas because of its action scenes and over the top style.
The 21st-century remake is set to star Lupita Nyong’o in a role similar to that of Jefrrey. According to Deadline, the script is currently being written by Eran Creevy with reference to previous versions written by Cloverfield Lane‘s Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken. Alongside John Woo, eOne’s Mark Gordon, Lion Rock’s Lori Tilkin, Luc Etienne, Matt Jackson, Terence Chang and Josh Clay Phillips will assist the film’s development in various production roles.
With the film on a fast track at Universal Pictures, production is set to begin in France later this year.
