One of, if not, the most intriguing prospects in this year’s NBA draft class, Luka Doncic will be a unique draft pick in many aspects. A versatile 6’6″ Slovenian wing, Doncic is currently playing his basketball overseas for Real Madrid.
Doncic has been spectacular for Real Madrid this season and at only 19-years-old is one of their most impactful players. With a commitment to the team, it could cost him some key exposure ahead of the draft. According to Doncic’s agent, he won’t be able to privately work out for any NBA teams ahead of draft day. Following from Sean Deveney of Sporting News:
He won’t be able to work out on an individual basis, even for a team that has the top overall pick.
“I don’t think that will be an issue,” Bill Duffy, Doncic’s agent, told Sporting News on Tuesday. “Playing in the Euroleague speaks for itself. What he has been able to do, it speaks to both the talent and preparedness for Luka. He has had a different level of experience than most of his peers. Euroleague is the next step to playing in the NBA.”
Duffy said that Doncic won’t work out for teams ahead of this June’s draft because of his commitments to Real Madrid.
The reason behind why Luka Doncic will be absent is actually because of how well his Real Madrid team has played this season. They are slated to be part of the Euro League Final Four which will take place during mid-to-late May.
Doncic himself has been a vital part of his team’s success this season as his production does speak for itself. Still just a teenager playing in a league alongside grown professionals well in their 30’s, Doncic averaged 14.7 points, 4.6 assists, and 5.1 rebounds.
His modern and dynamic skillset has him labeled as one of the best overall players in this year’s class and chances are he is selected with one of the very top picks in this year’s NBA Draft. Whether teams interested in him not being able to work him out privately will alter his draft stock remains to be seen but with so much talent and superstar potential, he’ll be hard to pass up.
