Luka Doncic is regarded by many as the best guard eligible for the 2018 NBA draft, if not the best player overall. The Slovenian star has dazzled international play with his scoring ability and sensational passing while taking on some of the best talents European hoops has to offer. But despite his high stock, Doncic has been rather non-committal on his status going into 2018.
Doncic did an interview with “Super EuroLeague” online magazine (H/T to Eurohoops.Net) where the young star spoke about his possible move to the NBA.
“No, I can’t say that. Let’s see how this season will go. Noone ever knows what the future holds.”
This isn’t the first time Doncic has been unsure about his future in the NBA. He’s previously said that he feels most comfortable playing for Real Madrid.
There has been good and bad with young international stars jumping ship to the NBA as younger athletes. While guys like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic and Kristaps Porzingis have found success in their young NBA career after leaving an international league, others like Mario Hezonja, Dante Exum and Jan Veselý found struggles for one reason or another. No one wants Doncic to fail to meet expectations, especially if he’s selected with a top-five pick come June.
Doncic could follow in the footsteps of fellow international basketball stars, Serbian guards Milos Teodosic and Bogdan Bogdanovic and Sergio Llull. Both Serbian guards elected to delay their NBA debuts for a few years before making the jump to the NBA this season while Llull is still waiting to make his move to the NBA. They all are deciding to move over to the NBA when they feel the time is right for them in their careers.
Tankathon currently has Doncic as the second player being selected.
