Louie Ray and YN Jay paint a vivid picture of what it means to overcome the obstacles that exist in central Michigan on their new single, “Nobody Proud.” Both Michigan natives weave their off-kilter flows in and out of the ringing DJ Updoe production filled with snares and Bay Area influence.
“I feel alone, I feel like I need my heat to walk around/Really livin’ that, get the chills and sh*t, I’m feelin’ that,” Louie Ray states with an unwavering voice.
“I could’ve picked you up, but you ain’t wanna go ’cause you was scared/Seen a n*gga die, think he was traumatized ’cause he was there/N*gga, how I’m fake? Like how I cut you off, ’cause you was there,” YN Jay adds.
YN Jay and Louie Ray are never ones to shy away from talking about tough times or violent encounters, but they also make sure to slide in a comedic bar or two along the way. With that said, the duo delivers each line with such unwavering force that makes the listener that make the listener wonder if it’s a joke or a straight-forward statement.
“N*gga tried to run, he caught some bullets when he passed, he looked like Gary/In Bikini Bottom with SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs, I feel like-, damn, ayy, I feel like Gary,” YN Jay adds.
Taking their sound to another level, the Michigan duo offered a refreshing visual. Inspired by The Proud Family, the two perform their newest record in a cartoon world that takes them everywhere from Michigan to Bikini Bottom. Check out the “Nobody Proud” video below.
