Syfy might be looking to build their own small screen DC Universe similar to The CW. The network already has Krypton going strong as it kicks off its second season this week. And, according to Variety, they’re developing a Lobo solo series to spin-off the Superman prequel. Everyone’s favorite alien bounty hunter is set to appear in this season of Krypton but, we don’t know much about what his role will be.
Not much is known about the Lobo series yet either. Cameron Welsh, an executive producer of Krypton is attached to serve as writer and executive producer. Otherwise, Emmett J. Scanlan, the actor who portrays Lobo in Krypton is expected to reprise his role. That’s really about all we know though. The series would presumably follow Lobo as he travels through space, fulfilling bounties and finding trouble.
Lobo was first introduced in the comics in 1983 as a villain. At the time, he was seen as an answer to (and parody of) some of Marvel’s more over-the-top heroes and villains such as The Punisher and Wolverine. However, in the time since he has become more of an anti-hero and gained a passionate fanbase in the process.
It may seem like a strange move to spin-off a cult favorite hero on the small screen as DC’s movie universe struggles to find its footing. But, as Marvel’s had their sights set on the box office over the last decade, DC has ruled the TV space. The CW’s Arrowverse isn’t my personal favorite but between that, Titans, and Doom Patrol, DC has been killing it. And, if the Titans season 2 Superboy news is anything to go off, they’re not content to just rest on their laurels. Honestly, I’ve heard that even Krypton isn’t that bad. So, even if only some of that ‘DC TV Magic’ rubs off on Lobo, we could be in for something really special.
