Charlie Bean, director of The Lego Ninjago Movie, is set to direct the upcoming live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp. The Hollywood Reporter first reported on the announcement. Brigham Taylor, who worked on The Jungle Book remake is set to produce. The film will be a live-action/CGI hybrid following the plot of the original.
The film will reportedly release on Disney’s new streaming service, set to launch in 2019. The announcement shows Disney’s continued commitment to the service. This comes after the announcement of Jon Favreau’s upcoming Star Wars series which will likely head to the streaming service. The service will apparently receive four to six movies a year including content from Disney brands such as Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar.
Bean is a longtime animator who has written on Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack. He also directed all but one of the episodes of Disney XD’s Tron: Uprising. Following his film debut with the Ninjago movie, Lady and the Tramp now launches the director into the live-action world while keeping him in the realm of animation.
Andrew Bujalski wrote the script for the remake of the classic film. Jessica Virtue and Chaz Salembier are overseeing the project for Disney.
Lady and the Tramp is set for release sometime in 2019.
