The Seattle Seahawks, despite getting off to an encouraging start to their campaign behind MVP-frontrunner Russell Wilson, are still looking for ways to improve themselves nearly halfway into the regular season. The Hawks utilized the trade block to patch up the back end of their defense, swinging a deal for Detroit Lions safety Quandre Diggs.
According to a release from the Lions, Detroit shipped away Diggs along with a seventh-round draft pick in 2021 for a fifth-rounder in 2020. The Texas product was drafted by the Lions as a sixth-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and had started five out of the team’s first six games this season. Diggs was forced to watch their Week 6 loss to the Packers from the sideline with a hamstring injury.
While Diggs may not be a household name across the NFL, he is one of the brighter young safeties in the game. For a team on the cusp of a long rebuild like the Lions, dealing away an exciting young piece and a 2021 draft pick just to move up a couple of rounds in this year’s draft doesn’t make much sense.
Diggs was off to a fast start again this season with Detroit, racking up 20 tackles in the five games he was active for. A Seahawks defense that looks vastly improved just got even better at a position that used to be a glaring liability.
The days of a top-tier defense and the Legion of Boom are a thing of the past in Seattle. They’ve instead turned into an offensive-minded team, utilizing an offense powered by Russell Wilson and Chris Carson to run the ball down people’s throats.
Now Diggs adds more talent to a Seattle safety unit that was headlined by Tedric Thompson and Bradley McDougald. Expect Diggs to likely step into a starting role right away as they prepare to take on the Falcons in Week 8.
