It’s time to begin life after Thrones. Though she’ll probably always be associated with Cersei Lannister, Lena Headey is moving on to more light-hearted fare with her next role. Headey is reportedly set to star in Rita, a new comedy-drama pilot from Showtime.
Headey will star as the titular character, a single mother and teacher who tries to navigate a messy life. She’s unfiltered and headstrong which, considering the role she just wrapped up, seems right in Headey’s wheelhouse. The series is based on an award-winning Danish series of the same name.
Jana Winograde, Showtime’s President of Entertainment released a statement regarding the casting. “Rita is a deliciously subversive character who will make you laugh and cry as she continuously challenges the hypocrisy around her. It goes without saying that Lena Headey is a force, whose essence is ideal to take on this wonderfully dynamic lead role.”
Headey is executive producing the pilot along with creator and showrunner Christian Torpe. Torpe, who created the original, is also serving as a writer for the pilot.
No word yet on if the series will be picked up or not.
