Lena Dunham
Lena Dunham who is best known for creating, writing and starring in HBO series Girls, will write and bring the true story of a Syrian refugee stranded at sea to life.
Co-producers Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrahams brought Dunham onto the film, which is an adaptation of, “A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea: One Refugee’s Incredible Story of Love, Loss, and Survival.”
The book is written by Mellisa Fleming, the Head of Communications and Chief Spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Fleming is well known for her TED talk on the subject of refugees which has been viewed more than 800,000 times.
Dunham has a big task to fill as the book was received well by the masses. The book is an emotionally riveting and incredible story of a young woman, an international crisis, and the triumph of the human spirit.
It follows the journey of Doaa Al Zamel, a young Syrian refugee in search of a better life.
Doaa with her family leaves a dismantled Syria for Egypt where the environment is becoming even more unstable. Doaa falls in love and decides to escape to Europe with her lover. They embark on the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean sea to seek asylum in hopes for a better tomorrow.
After four days at sea, the boat is sunk by another boat and Doaa is adrift with two little girls that attach to her for safety. Alone Doaa must survive and not lose hope, thus setting a tale full of struggle and triumph. With such strong producers and an equally strong writer in Lena Dunham, the story shall be a definite must watch on the big screen.
