Marvel announced today that production has begun on Captain Marvel.
With the announcement came the news that Clark Gregg and Lee Pace will be joining the Brie Larson-led film, both reprising previous roles. Gregg will play Agent Coulson, who hasn’t been seen in the MCU films since his death in 2012’s The Avengers. Coulson played a major role in Phase 1 of the MCU but since his resurrection, he’s been leading a team on ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Lee Pace will be reprising his role as Ronan the Accuser from 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Djimon Hounsou will also reprise his role from Guardians as Korath the Pursuer, a mercenary who works with Ronan. The film takes place in the 90s, so it will serve to flesh out the backstory for these characters.
As previously announced Captain Marvel is directed by the writing/directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who work on Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind.
Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. As mentioned above, Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990s, which is new territory for the MCU.
Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace and Jude Law round out the cast. Marvel head Kevin Feige is producing.
Captain Marvel is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
