Over the last few years, we have definitely seen an uptick in NBA players voicing their opinions about politics, economic concerns and social issues. During the last few seasons, we have seen players speak about issues including police harassment, police brutality, mass incarceration and more. One of the many players leading this charge has been LeBron James.
LeBron James has become more vocal through his HBO show, The Shop. In addition, he’s locked in for an upcoming series with Showtime called Shut Up and Dribble. Not to mention, he’s delved into the world of education by opening up his own school this summer. In short, James has become one of the world’s most socially active athletes in his generation.
During a stop in San Antonio to meet up with Popovich and the Spurs, James made a loud statement without ever saying a word. On his way into the arena, James was seen donning a “Beto for Senate” hat. The hat was in reference to Senate candidate, Beto O’Rourke, who is running against former presidential candidate, Ted Cruz, in the upcoming election.
James has long been a supporter for the Texas Senate candidate. Earlier, James voiced his support for O’Rourke when the politician published a video supporting NFL players right to protest the national anthem. In the video, O’Rourke says that he can “think of nothing more American” than athletes bringing awareness to Black Americans who are “being killed at a frightening level right now”.
James will not be able to vote for O’Rourke on election day, but an endorsement from the world’s most popular athlete may go along way in November.
