Count LeBron James as another person in the long line of Stephen Curry fans. The Cleveland Cavaliers forward and four-time MVP winner gave his blessing and approval of Curry winning the MVP award for the second time in as many years.
The following from the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
“I think he definitely deserved it,” James said. “You look at Steph’s numbers, he averaged 30 (points per game, led the NBA), he led the league in steals (169), he was 90-50-40 (shooting percentages from the foul line, the field, and 3-point), and they (the Warriors) won 73 (games). So, I don’t, do you have any debate over that, really, when it comes to that award?”
Curry was named the most valuable player for the second straight time, this week and made history as the first player ever to be the unanimous selection. As LeBron aptly puts it, he was an incredible player from all viewpoints in a year when his team set the record for regular season wins.
As is the case in all of these situations, there will always be some debate about whether or not the person who won it is deserving and whether him winning the award says something greater about the state of the league.
The fact of the matter is that Stephen Curry was incredible all year and there was no one more deserving of the award in a year where one could argue Curry had the greatest scoring season of all time. When one of the greatest players of all time, who is still in his prime and has a claim to the MVP every single season is saying the same thing, it might be wise to listen.
