Cleveland Cavalier forward LeBron James confirmed that he’d be interested in owning a team, and told Jason Lloyd of The Athletic that he’d “obviously” want to buy the Cavs if current owner Dan Gilbert opted to sell:
“To be an owner of any team would be crazy. If this thing opened up and I’m in a position financially, and I’ve got the right team around me, obviously. But who’s to say Dan will (sell)?” James said. “I’ve always kept it just player/owner at this point. I guess once I come down to that point, if the conversation needed to be had, I’ll have it. But I don’t have it right now.”
LeBron James’ immediate future is up in the air; he hasn’t refuted any of the rumors about him leaving Cleveland next summer, which makes it easy to picture him in a Lakers or Knicks jersey next season. Regardless of where James plays out the fourth and probably final chapter of his career, he’s the greatest Cavalier ever by a mile.
He’s done so much for the franchise that it’s hard to imagine fans really being too bitter or upset if he left (although they probably will be anyway). The point is, no matter where James plays next (if he does leave), he’ll always be a Cav. And it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see him taking on some sort of front office or ownership role with the franchise when he finally ends his illustrious career.
