LeBron James doesn’t sound very worried about the new look Golden State Warriors.
What’s been a summer filled with drama and insults for Kevin Durant has been a period of rejoice and relaxation for the Finals MVP LeBron James, who’s coming off his third NBA championship this past season.
While many have publicly voiced their opinions — much of which contain insults — directed towards Kevin Durant and his decision to switch teams, LeBron is doing the exact opposite. Contrary to the majority of fans believing Durant’s decision will make the league uncompetitive, James views the situation in a different perspective.
In an interview with Business Insiders, James proclaimed the unexpected:
“I think everyone had the “wow” thing,” James said, speaking about when he heard Durant had joined the Warriors. “My [reaction] was no different from the average person who doesn’t know basketball to the person who watches it or covers it every day. So, I think it’s all great for our league. Our league is very competitive. It’s continued to grow, and [NBA Commissioner] Adam Silver has done a great job of picking up where David Stern started, so it’s pretty cool.”
James, who caused a big stir by leaving Cleveland in 2010 and Miami in 2014, is no stranger to causing summer drama. James was asked if he now better understands the reaction some fans had when he took his talents to South Beach six years ago.
“Well, I think every decision is different”, James continued. “My decision to leave Cleveland to go to Miami and then go back is different from Kevin Durant leaving OKC [home of the Oklahoma City Thunder] and going to the Warriors. It’s different from Shaq leaving Orlando and going to the [Los Angeles] Lakers. It’s different from Michael retiring, coming back, retiring, coming back, and then going to the [Washington] Wizards. So I think every decision is different, and how much you have invested in that player, I guess, or how much you feel for that player is how you’re going to react. So everyone is different.”
LeBron isn’t the least worried about the Warriors’ new additions, showing very little emotion about the story that has many NBA fans worried about the upcoming season.
The Cavaliers’ biggest threat to repeat as NBA champions is the Warriors at the moment, whether or not James wants to publicly acknowledge it. The addition of Kevin Durant may be good for the league in the eyes of LeBron, but for the majority of fans, Durant’s decision certainly wasn’t a good business one.
