This season, the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers have gone through a rollercoaster-like season. After taking down the Golden State Warriors in the finals, an up and down season full of multiple situations was not expected in the city of Cleveland.
For starters, the Cavaliers entered the season with an obvious hole at their backup point guard spot. Although they put trust in rookie guard Kay Felder, it was clear that a backup guard needed to be signed. The Cavaliers worked out multiple guards, but not before LeBron James made it known that the team also lacked a playmaker.
Subsequently, Cavaliers General Manager David Griffin was the man tasked with finding a backup point guard, a playmaker and also some pieces to bulk their bench up. Like clockwork, Griffin traded for sharpshooter Kyle Korver, signed Deron Williams who was bought out by the Mavericks and signed former number two overall pick Derrick Williams.
Griffin’s ability to make swift and soundly moves for the Cavaliers over the past few season has been unprecedented and LeBron James not only has noticed but backs Griffin as GM.
Following from Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
“It makes no sense why he shouldn’t get an extension,” James recently told ESPN. “He’s pulled every move — he’s tried to make every move happen — to better this team to be able to compete for a championship. So we wouldn’t be in this position, obviously, without him and without the guys that are here — from the coaching staff to the players to Griff. He’s been a big piece of it.”
