After much speculation, it appears as though Larry Sanders could finally make his return to the NBA. According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, Sanders and the Cleveland Cavaliers are in “serious discussions” for a deal that could be signed as early as Monday.
The Cavs have not decided who to waive in order to clear a roster spot for Sanders, according to Charania. However, Andrew Bogut seems like the likely candidate after breaking his leg about a minute into his Cavs’ debut earlier this week.
Sanders has not played in the NBA since February 2015, momentarily retiring from the league to pursue other interests while repairing his mental health, something he has been very open to sharing with the public.
Sanders has been rumored to make a comeback for a while now but it became more serious after he had a workout earlier this month where several NBA teams were present. According to Charania, Sanders had private meetings with the Cavs, Lakers, and Celtics, ultimately securing this contract with the defending champs.
At his peak, Larry Sanders was an elite shot-blocker, something that the Cavaliers need in their pursuit for a repeat. Cleveland is the perfect situation for Sanders where he can showcase his skills without too much burden placed on his shoulders.
