We cannot just basketball in greatness can we? Everytime some phenomenon comes around there are people that just can’t help but be cynical about it and whine about how bleak the future of basketball is going to be.
People like Mark Jackson who is low key talking out of the “Get off my lawn” handbook when it comes to AP Athlete of the Year Stephen Curry and how his influence will apparently brainwash the kids into thinking that taking threes will get you to the NBA. As if coaches have no influence.
But Larry Bird doesn’t mind. He’s nowhere near the “Get off my lawn” talk. He’s perfectly content with the influence Stephen Curry has.
“I think he loves Steph Curry,” Bird said. “But if you walk in any gym, if there are kids in there, they’re all shooting 3-pointers. That’s the way it was when I walked in gyms years ago. I don’t see anything wrong with it.
“I just think Steph Curry is probably right now our best player and what a champion. He (Jackson) said `what a champion.’ That team out there is a real champion. Because if you win a championship and then come out and go 28-1, that’s pretty special.”
I think it’s safe to say that changes will be made to the game at some point in the future. The court could possibly be larger, who knows. We can tell that the game is evolving and the game will have to keep up with the players and how much bigger, stronger and faster they’re getting.
But before the future, comes the present. So just enjoy what we are witnessing! Basketball is fine right now, there is no epidemic. Let’s just take in the historic play were watching and when the future comes to us we will talk about it no doubt and like everything else it’ll be dealt with.
