If you are a basketball player and Larry Bird supports you. You’re doing something right. Larry Bird rarely talks about players today unless they play for the Indiana Pacers. But with this fatal 4-way for the Most Valuable Player award. How can you not chime in?!
It’s the best story this year behind the emergence of Atlanta and Golden State. 4 NBA players that all have a legitimate case for the MVP award. I love it. It’s such a good subject to talk about. Larry Bird talked to Mike Mazzeo of ESPN, throwing his hat in the Westbrook camp.
ESPN.com: Russell Westbrook has been averaging nearly 30 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds per game for over a month now. You’ve put together similar stretches during your career. What do you think of what he’s been able to accomplish?
Larry Bird: Here’s a young man that has had serious injuries — bad knee injuries throughout his career — yet every time he walks on the court, you know you’re going to get 100 percent from him. He attacks, he’s fearless and he plays the way it should be played, so I’m all for him. I hope he wins 10 MVPs in a row. I just love players that compete on a nightly basis and really take the challenge to their opponents.
10 MVPs. That’s an interesting number. I mean it’ll never happen but hey. A man can dream. Not even LeBron and Michael Jordan could whitewash a decade. Karl Malone got one. And so did Derrick Rose.
Kevin Durant is a different story. And do you know what’s interesting and also aggravating about OKC? If Westbrook wins the MVP. That will be the first time two players from the same team have won back to back MVPs since Bob Cousy and Bill Russell. That my friends is rare air.
And also gives me a reason to say get Brooks out of there.
