According to RealGM, the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns also tried to hire Steve Nash this summer. Nash recently accepted a role as a player development consultant with the Golden State Warriors.
The report does not come as much of a shock. Nash played the majority of his career with the Suns, becoming a team legend along the way. He also spent the final three years of his career with the Lakers. What is more surprising is that he did not accept either of those offers and instead chose to join the Warriors.
Rejecting the Suns’ offer is surprising, certainly, only for the fact that he is so beloved in Phoenix. Nash will always be known as a Sun, despite his years playing as a Laker and Dallas Maverick. However, rejecting the Lakers’ offer is perhaps even more surprising.
Throughout last season, it seemed as though the Lakers were primed to add Nash as an assistant coach, especially as he spent some time working out with Jordan Clarkson during the all-star break. He also routinely claimed that he would not join any other teams if the Lakers waived him during his last two years, as he wanted to stay near his family. By staying in California, he gets to stay close to his kids, but it is still a bit different than what he claimed towards the end of his playing career.
Regardless, Nash is now a consultant with the Warriors, where he will be helping the best backcourt in the league with its laundry, as well as helping it get even better.
